It's slightly overwhelming thinking about the logistics of taking a holiday somewhere as remote as Canna.

However, don't worry!
The information on this page should reassure you that coming to Canna is a realistic possibility!

Travel

Small Isles ferry leaving Canna harbour by Duncan SimeyCanna is serviced by the Small Isles ferry from Mallaig. The ferry runs every day during the Summer. See the CalMac Website for details.

Your adventure starts at Mallaig - cars are only allowed on Canna by permit from the National Trust for scotland! Mallaig is well serviced by both bus and rail so leaving your car at home is a viable option.

If arriving by car, we recommend dropping your bags on the quay-side and then drive round to East Bay which allows up to two weeks free parking.

You can either carry your bags onto the ferry, or pay CalMac a small charge and they will do it for you.

When you arrive at Canna, we will meet you at the ferry and take you up to Tighard.

Tighard through the trees by Duncan SimeyTighard is extremely well appointed. The bedrooms are generously sized with plenty of space to unpack and a writing table in the window. You are also welcome to use the lounge where a real fire awaits you should the weather turn bad.

Canna electricity is produced by 3 diesel powered generators. This is very expensive and so to cut costs and reduce the islands carbon footprint the electricity supply is shut down from 2359 until 0600.  Nightlights and torches are provided! Normal electric power is available during the day so charging cameras, etc will not be a problem. Tighard also has internet access, but please check in advance.

Please note that Canna does not have mobile phone coverage. There is a coin operated phone in Tighard for use by guests and a telephone box at the bottom of the track.

Food

We serve a full breakfast cooked to your individual choice.

A Full Course Dinner is available on Sunday and Monday from £30 Per Person.

From Tuesday through Saturday we invite our guests to take Dinner at Canna's unique Café & Restaurant.  The Gille Brighde overlooks the harbour and is a short walk through the wood from Tighard. Your hosts are Aart and Amanda and they invite you to visit their website cannarestaurant.com to see the delights they have to offer.

We are not licenced to sell wine but you are welcome to bring your own.  We will provide glasses and a corkscrew!

Because of our remote location, it's a practical consideration that a lot of our food is local. Tides and weather dictate a lot, but you will probably be offered Rabbit, Venison, Mackerel and Lobsters. The seafood is caught using Tighard's own fishing boat.

There are no shops on Canna.

Please note our food is freshly prepared and we need a little notice to get your meal ready!

Equipment

Waves on Canna by Duncan SimeyCanna is a wild remote place where the weather can change dramatically in minutes! You will need a stout pair of walking boots and something to carry an extra layer of clothing and good set of waterproofs.

There is a map at Tighard you can use for planning where to go and some people find that adequate. However, we recommend bringing a map with you -Ordnance Survey Landranger 039 "Rùm, Eigg, Muck & Canna".

Binoculars are highly recommended as these make watching the Eagles a much more intimate experience.

The scenery is breathtaking, so a camera should already be on your list of essential items!

You may also like to consider bringing a pair of slippers to wear indoors at Tighard!
